Getting Started

Requirements

Reland runs on any good WordPress hosting. Check that your server meets these values. If you're not sure, send this table to your hosting company.

SettingMinimumRecommended
WordPress6.0The latest version (tested up to 7.1)
PHP8.28.2 or newer
PHP memory limit128M256M or more
Max execution time10 seconds60 seconds or more
Max input vars10003000
Free disk space100 MB300 MB or more
PHP extensionsXML (XMLReader, DOMDocument, SimpleXML)Also GD or Imagick for images

You don't have to check these by hand. The Demo Import page tests your server and shows anything that needs fixing.

Raising PHP limits

Most hosts let you change these values in their control panel (look for "PHP settings" or "PHP options"). If yours doesn't, add these lines to the php.ini file, or ask your host to do it:

php.ini
memory_limit = 256M
max_execution_time = 120
max_input_vars = 3000

To raise the memory WordPress itself may use, add this line to wp-config.php, just above the line /* That's all, stop editing! */:

wp-config.php
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );

WordPress won't activate Reland on PHP older than 8.2. It shows "This theme doesn't work with your version of PHP". Ask your host to switch your site to PHP 8.2 or newer; it takes them a minute.

Getting Started

What You Download

The one file you upload to WordPress is reland.zip. It's the theme, and it already contains the English and Arabic demo content. Elementor, Reland Core and the other plugins are installed from your dashboard in the next steps.

Where you boughtWhat to download
ThemeGenixUse the download link in your purchase email.
ThemeForestGo to Downloads in your Envato account and choose Installable WordPress file only. That's reland.zip. "All files & documentation" is the full package; unzip it and use the reland.zip inside.

Don't upload the full package zip. WordPress would answer "The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet." Unzip it first and upload reland.zip.

Getting Started

Live Demos

All 15 homepages. Click a card to open the live demo.

Installation

Install the Theme

There are two ways. The dashboard way is the easiest and works on almost every host.

From the WordPress dashboard

  1. Open the theme uploaderGo to Appearance › Themes, click Add Theme, then click Upload Theme at the top.
Appearance › Themes › Add Theme › Upload Theme
Appearance › Themes › Add Theme › Upload Theme
  2. Upload reland.zipClick Choose File, select reland.zip and click Install Now.
  3. ActivateWhen you see "Theme installed successfully.", click Activate.
    Click Activate after the upload
    Click Activate after the upload
  4. Continue with the pluginsWordPress now opens the Install Required Plugins screen. Go on to Install Plugins.

With FTP (if the upload fails)

  1. Unzip reland.zip on your computer. You get a folder named reland.
  2. Connect to your site with an FTP program (for example FileZilla) or your host's File Manager.
  3. Upload the reland folder into wp-content/themes/.
  4. Go to Appearance › Themes and click Activate on Reland.

If the upload says "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini", your host's upload limit is too small. Use FTP, or ask your host to raise upload_max_filesize.

Installation

Install Plugins

Reland needs two plugins and recommends three more. They're all free and install in one go. Right after you activate the theme, a notice lists them:

The plugin notice after activating Reland

  4. Activate allSelect all plugins again, choose Activate under Bulk actions and click Apply.

Install all five. The demo import needs every plugin in this list to be active, not only the two required ones. You can also install and activate them from the Demo Import page with one button.

Installation

Import a Demo

One click makes your site look exactly like the live demo, with all its pages, images, menus, headers, footers and settings. Go to Reland Core › Demo Import.

Reland Core › Demo Import
Reland Core › Demo Import

1. Check the three tiles

The tiles at the top tell you if your site is ready. Click a tile to see the details.

  • System Status tests your server. Green is fine, yellow works but is worth fixing, red stops the import. Each red or yellow row says how to fix it, then click Check Again.
  • Plugins must say "5 of 5 ready". If a plugin is missing, click Install & Activate All.
  • Demo Content shows how many items will be added.

2. Choose the language

Use the switch above the demos: English LTR or Arabic RTL. For an Arabic site, set your site language to Arabic first (see RTL & Arabic). If your site is in English and you pick an Arabic demo, the import window reminds you to change the language first.

3. Import

  2. Choose what to bring inContent (pages, posts, projects, images, menus and forms) is always included. Keep Widgets and Theme settings ticked. Tick Use Home 0X as the front page to make this demo your homepage.

What the import does

  • Adds all demo pages: the 15 homepages, the inner pages, blog posts, projects, team members, headers, footers, mega menus and contact forms.
  • Downloads the demo images into your Media Library.
  • Sets your homepage (if you ticked it) and the blog page "Our Blog".
  • Puts the menu in the Main Menu location and fills the sidebar widgets.
  • Brings in the demo's Elementor colors, fonts and settings.
  • Turns on pretty links (/sample-page/) if your site still uses plain links.
  • Removes WordPress's untouched sample content: the "Hello world!" post, the Sample Page, the draft Privacy Policy and Contact Form 7's "Contact form 1".

One import is enough. All 15 homepages are added, whichever demo you import. To switch to another homepage later, just change it in Settings › Reading.

Safe to run again

Nothing on your site is replaced or duplicated. Your own pages, menus and settings stay as they are, and running the import again only adds what is missing. If the import stops halfway (for example, your connection drops), your progress is saved: click Continue Import, or open the page again later and continue from the banner.

Use one language per site. If you already imported the English demo, start from a fresh site for the Arabic one, and the other way round. A Full reset gives you a fresh site.

Installation

Child Theme

Most people don't need a child theme: Elementor, the Customizer and Appearance › Customize › Additional CSS cover almost everything. Use one only if you plan to edit the theme's PHP or CSS files, so an update doesn't overwrite your changes.

  1. Keep Reland installed. The child theme needs it.
  2. Upload reland-child.zip the same way as the main theme and click Activate.
  3. Import the demo after activating the child theme. WordPress stores Customizer settings per theme, so the demo's settings are then saved for the child theme.

Making your own instead? A child theme only needs a style.css with this header inside a folder such as wp-content/themes/reland-child/. Reland loads the child's style.css for you.

After the import, all 15 homepages are pages on your site: Home One to Home Fifteen. To change which one opens first:

  1. Go to Settings › Reading.
  2. Under Your homepage displays, choose A static page.
  3. Pick a page under Homepage (for example "Home Five") and keep "Our Blog" as the Posts page.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Built-in vs. Elementor header and footer: the demo uses Elementor headers and footers from Header & Footer. They replace the theme's built-in ones, so Header Setting and Footer Settings only matter on pages without an Elementor header or footer.

Site Setup

Colors & Fonts

Reland takes its colors and fonts from Elementor's Site Settings. Change a color or font there once and every page follows: Elementor pages, the blog, archives, the header and the footer.

  1. Open any page with Elementor (Pages › Edit with Elementor).
  2. Click the Elementor logo at the top left and choose Site Settings.
  3. Open Global Colors, click a color and pick a new one.

In the Customizer, Color Setting and Typography Setting show a note with an Open Site Settings button that takes you to the same place.

Projects & Post Types

Reland comes with Projects, and the demo adds Team. Manage them, and create your own content types, in Reland Core › Post Types.

Reland Core › Post Types
Reland Core › Post Types

Add a project

  1. Go to Projects › Add New.
  2. Add a title, text and a featured image.
  3. Fill in the project fields below the editor: places, facts, photos, videos, features, nearby places, floor plans and downloads.
  4. Choose its Status, Type and Location on the right, and click Publish.

Change a post type

Click Edit on a post type to change it:

  • General: the plural and singular name, the URL Slug (for example properties instead of project) and the menu icon.
  • Taxonomies: the ways to group posts (Projects use Status, Type and Location).
  • Archive Page: the page that lists the posts, and how many per page.
  • Single Post: the field set (Project or Team member) and the Elementor page used as the layout of each post.
  • Multilingual: make the post type translatable with WPML, Polylang or TranslatePress.
Editing the Projects post type

Changing a URL slug changes the address of every post of that type, and old links are not redirected. On a live site, add redirects with a plugin such as Redirection.

To add your own content type, such as "Case Studies", click Add Post Type. The Post Type Key can't be changed later, so choose it carefully.

Contact Forms

Reland uses Contact Form 7. The demo forms are in Contact › Contact Forms.

  1. Click a form to edit its fields.
  2. Open the Mail tab and enter your email address in To. The import has already set the sender to your own domain.
  3. Click Save.

To show a form on a page, add the Reland Contact Form widget in Elementor and choose the form. To put two fields side by side, wrap them in this div in the form editor. The widget's Stack Side-by-Side Fields option controls when they stack on small screens.

On team member pages, the mail tag [_team_member_email] sends the message to that team member. Not receiving any email? Many hosts block PHP mail; install an SMTP plugin such as WP Mail SMTP.

Elementor

Editing Pages

Every page in the demo is built with Elementor, so you edit text, images and layout visually.

  1. Go to Pages, open a page and click Edit with Elementor.

  4. Click Publish (or Update) to save.

New pages use Elementor's full-width layout, so Reland's sections can run edge to edge. To start a page fast, insert a ready-made page from the Template Library.

Reland Widgets

Reland adds 50 widgets to Elementor. Find them in the Reland Addons category of the panel; each one has a small Reland badge. Drag a widget onto the page to use it.

RTL & Arabic

Reland fully supports right-to-left languages and comes with a complete Arabic demo. WordPress decides the direction from your site language, and Reland loads its RTL styles automatically.

Translation

Reland is translation ready and ships with Arabic. Text on your pages is edited directly in Elementor; the files below translate the fixed texts of the theme and the plugin, such as "Read More" or "Search Results for".

With Loco Translate (easiest)

  1. Install and activate the free Loco Translate plugin.
  2. Go to Loco Translate › Themes › Reland and click New language.
  3. Choose your language, choose the System location (so updates don't remove it) and start translating.
  4. Do the same for Reland Core under Loco Translate › Plugins.

Building a multilingual site? Reland's post types work with WPML, Polylang and TranslatePress; turn on Translatable in each post type's settings.

Updating Reland

Always back up your site (files and database) before updating. Most hosts offer one-click backups, or use a plugin such as UpdraftPlus.

Update the theme

  1. Download the latest reland.zip the same way you did the first time.
  2. Go to Appearance › Themes › Add Theme › Upload Theme, choose the file and click Install Now.
  3. WordPress sees that Reland is already installed. Click Replace current with uploaded.

Your pages, settings and Customizer options stay as they are. Changes made inside the theme's files are lost, which is why a child theme exists.

Update Reland Core

Reland Core updates appear on the Plugins page. Automatic updates are off on purpose. When you click update, Reland Core asks you to confirm that you have a recent backup: tick I have a recent backup of this site and click Update Now.

Reset the Site

Want to start over? Reset clears your site without reinstalling WordPress. Delete only the parts you choose, such as the demo posts and their images, or take the whole site back to a fresh WordPress. Go to Reland Core › Reset.

A reset can't be undone. Deleted items don't go to the Trash, and only a backup can bring them back. Back up your site first (files and database), or try it on a staging copy.

Media LibraryEvery image and file, removed from the server too.
MenusAll menus and their links. Menu locations are cleared.
Categories, Tags and other taxonomiesAll of them, except the default category WordPress needs. Posts are not deleted.
CommentsComments, reviews, pingbacks, spam and trash.
WidgetsSidebar and footer widgets are removed, so the areas start empty.
Theme settingsCustomizer options and Additional CSS go back to Reland's defaults. Menus stay in place.
Elementor Site SettingsGlobal colors, fonts, buttons and layout go back to Reland's defaults.
Reland Core settingsWidgets you turned off on the Widgets page are turned on again.
Other usersEvery account except yours, other admins too. Their posts move to your account.

Remove the demo content, keep the design. Tick the content you don't need and leave Theme settings and Elementor Site Settings unticked. Your colors and fonts stay. After you delete content or media, Demo Import starts clean, so you can import a demo again later.

Full reset

Full reset takes your site back to a fresh WordPress, like a new install, without logging you out. Choose Full reset, check what will be deleted and kept, then click Review & Reset and confirm the same way.

Full reset: what is deleted and what is kept
Full reset: what is deleted and what is kept

Deleted: all posts, pages, projects and templates, the Media Library, menus, categories, tags, comments, widgets, theme settings, Elementor Site Settings, other users, and every plugin's settings and data in the database.

Kept:

  • Your account: username, password and email.
  • Site title, tagline and address.
  • Language, timezone and date format.
  • Permalink format.
  • Theme and plugin files: nothing is uninstalled.

Three options below the lists:

  • Keep Reland as the active theme is on by default. Turn it off to switch to the default WordPress theme.
  • Keep my plugins active is on by default. Turn it off to deactivate the other plugins; Reland Core always stays on.
  • Delete uploaded files empties wp-content/uploads, so no old files are left behind.

When it finishes, the page reloads and says "Your site is fresh again". Click Import a Demo to start building again.

Full reset is not available on a WordPress multisite network, because it would delete the other sites too, or on a site that shares its user table with another site. The card shows the reason. You can still reset the parts you choose.

How it works

  • Nothing is deleted until you confirm. You see the exact numbers first.
  • The reset runs in small steps with a progress ring, so large sites don't time out. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
  • If the connection drops, nothing is lost. Click Continue to carry on where it stopped. If you closed the page, a banner offers Continue or Discard when you come back.
  • Only administrators can open the Reset page.
  • Theme and plugin files are never deleted.

Speed Tips

  • Switch off the Reland widgets you don't use in Reland Core › Widgets. They then load no CSS or JavaScript.
  • Use a caching plugin, such as LiteSpeed Cache on LiteSpeed hosting or WP Rocket elsewhere.
  • Upload images in the size you need, and serve them as WebP. An image optimization plugin can convert them for you.
  • Run your site on PHP 8.2 or newer.
  • Remove plugins you no longer use.

Troubleshooting

The most common questions and their fixes.

"The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet."

You uploaded the full download instead of the theme. Unzip the download and upload reland.zip. See What You Download.

"The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini."

Your host's upload limit is too low. Install the theme with FTP, or ask your host to raise upload_max_filesize.

"This theme doesn't work with your version of PHP."

Reland needs PHP 8.2 or newer. Most hosts let you switch the PHP version in their control panel; otherwise ask them to do it.

Red items stop the import. Each row says how to fix it, usually by raising a PHP limit (see Raising PHP limits). Then click Check Again.

The import stopped or paused

Your progress is saved. Click Continue Import, or open the Demo Import page again and continue from the banner. If it keeps stopping, raise the memory limit and max execution time.

Some images are missing after the import

Your server couldn't download them. Check the Image download row in System Status, then run the import again: only the missing items are added.

How do I remove the demo content or start over?

Go to Reland Core › Reset. Delete only the parts you choose, or run a full reset for a fresh WordPress. Back up first. See Reset the Site.

Pages show "Page not found" (404)

Go to Settings › Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing anything. This refreshes your site's links.

Changes don't show, or the design looks broken

Clear your caching plugin and your browser cache. In Elementor, go to Elementor › Tools and regenerate the CSS files.

A header or footer doesn't show

In Header & Footer, check that the template is switched on, has a display rule and has been designed with Elementor. If another template has a more specific rule, that one wins.

The breadcrumb trail is missing

Activate the Breadcrumb NavXT plugin and check that Breadcrumb Info switch is enabled in Customizer › Breadcrumb Setting.

The mega menu doesn't appear

Mega menus work on top-level items only. Make sure the mega menu is published, selected in the menu item's Reland Core box, and that you clicked Save Menu.

I can't find the color options in the Customizer

Colors and fonts are set in Elementor's Site Settings, so all your pages share them. See Colors & Fonts.

Contact form emails don't arrive

Check the recipient in the form's Mail tab. If it's correct, your host probably blocks PHP mail; an SMTP plugin such as WP Mail SMTP fixes this.
